CBX Servicing Tips_

We are interested in seeing part and process specific reports on servicing routines from as many of you as possible! As a guideline we ask for articles of 300 - 600 words, using chronological methods and if at all possible - a few pictures included. Don't worry about their size or colour - we will remaster them to suit the site.

A full service can take 4 - 6 hours by an experienced motorcycle mechanic, and novice mechanics can take much longer! So unless you're prepared to service your own bike be prepared for high labour costs.

1981 / 1982 Models

If you own a Pro Link, and you have to work on the wiring loom, frame, tank or any other obscured part which is below or near the fairing - it's always the most prudent thing to plan for: - REMOVE THE FAIRING! It's a lot of hard work added to the list of things to do, but it pales in comparison to the amount of cussing and cursing together with the inevitable damage you will do to the bike in trying to work around the fairing.

Oil Changes

There are a few schools of thought on the type of oil best suited to the CBX 6 Cylinder engine. In short what you need to know is that the design of the engine is such that the clutch runs in oil. This means the friction modifiers in modern motor oils - a.k.a. synthetic oils, will cause clutch slip. So before you decide on your oil type - do the homework and choose wisely. The trade off is between wear & tear and the damage to your engine using an oil suited for performance and consumption. Always remember - the engine was designed 24 Years ago and modern superbike oil requirements are somewhat different!

Service intervals

  • 3750 Miles - replace engine oil; air filter, oil filter; adjust cam chain tension. Check: spark plugs; ignition timing; valve clearances; carburetor settings; throttle operation; battery; brake fluid; brake pads; suspension; brake system; brake light switch; headlight settings; clutch free play; side stand; nuts, wheels and give all nuts and bolts a quick inspection.

  • 7500 Miles - As 3750 plus new spark plugs and check steering head bearings.

  • 11,250 Miles - as 7500 plus change brake fluid and clean engine oil screen.

Swing arm
On early models the plastic swinging arm bushes wear quickly and on all models the exhaust system is a fast-rot item. Keep your eye out for wear and tear - look for lateral movement in the back wheel. A good MOT tester will put the bike on the centre stand and bending over the tail section, will lift the wheel upwards - feeling for lateral and accentuated horizontal play in the linkage system.

Exhaust Systems
Problems can occur with exhaust systems if they are not sealed to the head or the carburation is not properly adjusted, resulting in burnt out exhaust valves. Maintain the nuts and bolts holding the exhaust system together, or you will regret the day when you have to remove the system for other work!

Here are some handy maintenance tips, which if you would like to add to - please feel free do do so and email your advice.
